Soap is a cleansing agent made by reacting alkali metal hydroxide and fatty acids. In most cases, the alkali metal hydroxide (the salt) is either potassium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide. When dissolved in water, the potassium or sodium ion detaches from the chain and floats free in the water. This process leaves the head negatively charged.
