What does CBD stand for? And what does CBDa mean? Well, the short answers are cannabidiol and cannabidiolic acid, both of which are among the hundreds of cannabinoids and other compounds that naturally occur in cannabis plants. But there’s a longer answer too. Which we’ll cover in today’s post.
Planet earth provides so many wonderful plants. And one of those is cannabis. For over a thousand years, cannabis has been serving us for a variety of purposes. Initially, mankind used it for everything from construction material to a source of fabric. But then came the 20th century, and law enforcement took issue with cannabis for very specific reasons. (Some that weren’t completely fair. More on that later.)
While legal opinions shift, it’s still the same plant as it was in years past. And that means that it may be beneficial, thanks to the complex chemical workings inside cannabis. Plus, thanks to technological advances, we now have even more uses for cannabis and its derivatives.
Nowadays, you can find tinctures, gummies, drink concentrates and even CBD and CBDa-infused beauty products. But why is cannabis so versatile? It all comes down to its cannabinoids, an abundant family present within. And one of them, which goes by the acronym CBD, will be our focus for today. (Along with it’s acidic precursor, CBDa, since we blend both in a patent-pending, 1:1 formulation in all of the hemp-extracts we create at Tanasi.)
CBD is an acronym for cannabidiol. It is one of the most abundant cannabinoids inside cannabis, particularly abundant in industrial hemp.
Another famous cannabinoid people often compare CBD to is THC. And that’s not surprising, since THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the psychoactive cannabis compound that’s particularly abundant in marijuana. While these two are the most abundant cannabinoids, they’re not the only ones. Others include CBC and CBG, just to name a few.
Why all this alphabet soup, you may wonder? Well, we give these molecules acronyms for easy identification, since their chemical names are often long. And, while their names sound similar, and they all come from the same plant, they have different compositions and effects.
That’s most true when it comes to CBD vs THC. Because you can be certain that CBD is not, under any circumstances, capable of getting you high. But THC can, when taken in quantities above the legal threshold of 0.3% concentrations.
CBDa stands for cannabidiolic acid, an acidic precursor to CBD. The compound is best harvested in the early days of hemp plant development, right when it starts producing flowers. But even then, you’re usually left with small quantities of CBDa, since it converts to CBD with any exposure to heat, including from the sun. As such, most commercial CBD products contain little to no CBDa. But that’s not the case with products from Tanasi, since we combine CBD and CBDa in all our hemp-based so that each compound can support and boost the other. To learn more why this combination is such a powerful one, we invite you to review the research behind our 1:1 formulation of CBD and CBDA, in our patent application.
Both CBD and CBDa are generally considered safe supplements for consumption or application, especially when compared to alternative, unregulated supplements such as energy drinks or male enhancement products. That said, there are some minor side effects attached to the consumption of excessive amounts of these compounds. And, CBD interacts with certain medications, especially ones with grapefruit warnings, so you must talk to a licensed medical professional before trying these compound, alone or in combination. Below are some of the few side effects that you can expect if you consume larger than recommended doses of these products.
Now, these are side effects for users who are not also taking other supplements. Or for those who aren’t on any prescription medications. But anyone who is regularly taking medication should first consult with a healthcare provider before taking CBD. CBD tends to interact with other medications and deliver unintended effects, while also having the potential to change the way medications work in your body, possibly causing serious health complications.
Wondering what does CBD stand for when it comes to finding the right product to use? Well, since the CBD market is relatively new, and isn’t regulated by the FDA, there are a lot of sketchy companies out there. Buying from one of those is likely to have you end up with a subpar product that does not work as intended, and could even cause you physical harm. Better watch out for the following to ensure that you are buying from a high-quality seller.
Since the market is still evolving, it’s easy to see manufacturers update the label rather frequently. Yet, there’s something that should always appear on the label of a good manufacturer: third-party testing.
It is critical for all CBD and CBDa products to go through third-party testing. A laboratory unaffiliated with the manufacturer verifies its product before it hits the market. Manufactures worthy of your trust will post these results on their website. They should also include test results on their labels, as we always do at Tanasi.
CBD products do expire. So always check your batch number to make sure the commodities aren’t already spoiled. (While they won’t go off after that date, they are likely to lose effectiveness.) As you can imagine, sketchy sellers do not provide this info clearly or at all on their labels. Check them thoroughly.
Beyond cannabidiol, what does CBD stand for? Well, it’s a product more and more people are adding to their daily routines as a valued supplement. And, from the looks of the thousands of online testimonials, it indeed gives many people what they are looking for. Just remember, before you start your journey, that you can find many different forms of CBD and CBDa together on our Tanasi website, so one should easily fit your needs. And if it doesn’t? Not to worry! All our products are backed by a 30-day satisfaction guarantee!
