CBD Oil for Wrinkles

Cannabidiol, commonly known as CBD, is a component of marijuana and industrial hemp plants that’s been getting lots of attention recently. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is another component of the marijuana plant, CBD has no psychoactive effects. This means that CBD’s use doesn’t result in the ‘high’ that is typically associated with THC use. In fact, in the United States, legally sanctioned CBD products contain concentrations of 0.3% THC or less.

Because CBD is legal and carries many potential benefits due to its cannabidiol concentrations, its oil is used for many different purposes. And one of the most recent potential CBD benefits includes targeting skin wrinkles.

What Causes Wrinkles?

Collagen and elastin are responsible for keeping your skin smooth and wrinkle-free. However, skin wrinkling is a natural biological process as the skin becomes less firm, resulting in visible lines and wrinkles. The body produces less collagen as you age, contributing greatly to the loss of skin firmness.

At the same time, your skin’s natural oil production declines significantly, reducing your ability to lock in moisture. These two factors, therefore, make your skin thinner and more delicate. Consequently, your elastin levels drop, and the skin loses its ability to heal and reconstruct naturally.

Environmental factors and conditions may also cause skin wrinkling. External pollutants, poor nutrition, smoking, drug use, and prolonged exposure to the sun contribute significantly to wrinkling. Particularly, these factors affect your body’s elastin production, inhibiting collagen production. These factors can also cause sun spots, fine lines, and hyperpigmentation of your skin.

How Does CBD Oil Combat Wrinkles?

CBD may help combat skin wrinkling by addressing both intrinsic and extrinsic factors. But what mechanism might make CBD effective at preventing skin wrinkling? Well, the human body produces its own form of cannabinoids, called endocannabinoids, which are considered neurotransmitters. Endocannabinoids combine with your body’s cannabinoid receptors to balance and regulate various internal functions of your brain like sleep, mood, and even appetite. So, in interacting with your body’s internal receptors, CBD may promote the normal functioning of the reproductive, hormonal, and immune systems of the body. And balancing your hormones may help protect your skin’s appearance.

CBD oil may help prevent wrinkling in additional ways, including:

Acting as an Antioxidant

Research indicates that CBD is a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants are compounds that help stop the activity of free radicals in the body, thus preventing cell damage. In this case, CBD may help avoid wrinkling skin by reducing free radicals’ activity on your skin’s tissues and cells. Such free radicals cause an accelerated breakdown of collagen. As such, CBD helps slow down the process of collagen loss as you age. Ultimately, this could help prevent wrinkles and maintains a firm and youthful skin appearance.

Preventing Skin Inflammation

From a skincare perspective, inflammation and skin irritation causes your body to release agents that can damage the skin’s structural components, including elastin and collagen. This, in turn, results in skin wrinkling.

CBD’s suggested anti-inflammatory properties may relax and soothe your skin. This helps smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, making them less apparent as you age

Promoting Oil Secretion

Oil glands tend to lose productivity with age, which results in dry skin. And studies show that endocannabinoids and oil production may be related. Therefore, we believe that CBD oil could have a significant effect on the sebaceous glands’ oil excretion. This way, CBD oil combats wrinkles by promoting oil secretion, keeping your skin hydrated, supple, and looking young.

Reducing Stress

While this may not be an age-related factor, wrinkling can also be caused by excess stress and prolonged periods of anxiety. The effects of stress on the skin often become visible over time. CBD is known for its relaxing and mood-uplifting properties, and CBD oil may, therefore, be effective at reducing stress levels.

Better Sleep

Quality sleep goes a long way in maintaining smooth facial skin and an overall youthful appearance. Insufficient or poor-quality sleep easily causes facial wrinkles, especially eye wrinkles. While CBD oil may not directly help eliminate these wrinkles, it could help prevent them from forming by helping you sleep better.

Healing Damaged Skin

CBD may also affect skin cell regeneration. Skin cells can be damaged by external factors such as pollutants and prolonged exposure to the sun. CBD oil can help generate new skin cells, which keeps your skin in good shape. With optimal oil production, the skin stays moisturized and supple.

What’s the Best Way to Use CBD Oil for Wrinkles?

CBD oil can be consumed in various ways, depending on your desired results and preference. When it comes to using CBD oil for skin, there are three particularly effective delivery methods:

  • Topical application
  • Taking it under the tongue (sublingually)
  • Ingestion

Topical Application

CBD oil can be infused into other beauty products such as lotions, salves, or ointments. This way, you can apply it directly to your skin. This method of application is the most effective when it comes to fighting wrinkles. You don’t need any special knowledge or tools: all you need is to figure out the right amount of product to apply on your skin. Then, simply focus on the target areas where your skin wrinkles are most apparent.

Under the Tongue (Sublingual)

CBD oil can also be used in the form of tinctures, contained in small bottles with droppers. To enjoy CBD sublingually, draw your dose into the dropper and apply a few drops of CBD oil under your tongue. Then, just hold the drops in your mouth for up to two minutes, then swallow.

Ingestion/Edibles

Edibles are another easy and fun way to enjoy CBD oil. While some people enjoy CBD lollipops and gummy bears, you can also take your CBD in the form of a gel capsule or even as a water soluble drink concentrate! Because CBD edibles go through your digestive system, it takes longer for your body to process all the cannabinoids. This means edible CBD delivers the longest-lasting results.

Are There Side Effects of Using CBD Oil for Wrinkles?

CBD oil use poses little to no risk of side effects. Studies show that adults can ingest large doses of CBD without experiencing any significant side effects. And, when it comes to skincare, research shows that CBD oil can be used without any unwanted side effects to the skin.

Precautions When Using CBD Oil for Wrinkles

As mentioned, CBD oil is largely safe when used to combat wrinkles, as there are no unwanted effects associated with its use. However, there are some essential things you need to keep in mind.

While smoking and vaping CBD oil are common delivery methods, you shouldn’t choose these options if you intend to combat wrinkles. Besides being harsh to your lungs and respiratory system, smoking is a habit that’s linked to saggy, wrinkled skin.

Additionally, if you are on any kind of medication, you should consult your doctor before using CBD oil for wrinkles. Your provider will point out any potential issues or effects of using CBD oil while on your medication.

Other Benefits of CBD Oil to the Skin

Besides reducing the appearance of wrinkles, CBD oil may help keep your skin healthy and looking good by:

  • Addressing symptoms of skin diseases such as psoriasis, eczema, and rosacea.
  • Managing acne and breakouts.
  • Preventing bags under eyes.

Bottom Line

Among its many uses, CBD has proven its worth in skincare. Specifically, CBD oil appears to be effective at combating wrinkles, which are caused by aging and environmental factors. When ingested, CBD oil introduces cannabinoids to your bloodstream, promoting the normal functioning of your various internal systems and preventing some of the negative effects of aging. Most importantly, CBD oil appears to possess antioxidant properties that help prevent free radicals’ activity on skin cells. This reduces the breakdown of collagen, which prevents wrinkling by maintaining the elasticity of your skin. In combination, all these CBD properties may help preserve your skin’s smooth, youthful appearance.
